Main Course

12.8km

As you will be crossing the main boating channel at some point, this course requires you to know a bit about port & starboard channel markers. For your own safety you should know the ‘Rules of the Road’ on the water, in particular keeping to the starboard (right hand) side of waterways (except during the closed water Ceremonial Start slow procession Leg 1 marked in Yellow) and ensuring you leave enough space for on-coming vessels to pass on your port (left hand) side.

Leg 1. (1.1km)

Ceremonial Start –  All participants are to remain behind the designated lead vessels for this SLOW leg and follow the instructions of the Master of Ceremonies travelling in a pace boat at the head of the fleet.

Under the direction of the Master of Ceremonies, starting from the GAC, cruise slowly to the Hindmarsh Island bridge keeping as close as possible to the PORT (left hand) shoreline.  A limited Closed Water permit has been obtained to facilitate this ceremonial aspect of the event.

Leg 2. (0.3km)

Pass under the bridge and keep to the Goolwa  shoreline until you can pass round the 4 knot marker. This is approximately 100 metres upstream from the bridge.  Head directly across the channel to the Hindmarsh Island shoreline.

Important: As you are now crossing the main navigational channel, please be aware of any powered vessels using this channel.

Leg 3. (2.5km)

Head upstream from the bridge, note that this is quite shallow waters (~1.5m).  As you move around to the north shore of the island you approach a public boat ramp (small boats only) and an amenities block that can also be accessed by car from Captain Sturt Parade.

Leg 4. (0.9km)
Head across the channel towards starboard channel marker #35.
Leg 5. (0.8km)

Passing to starboard of channel marker #35, continue across the main channel into the Billy Goat Islands.

Important: As you are now crossing the main navigational channel, please be aware of any powered vessels using this channel.

Leg 6. (1.0km)

.Proceed through the islands, and just before entering the main Currency Creek waterway turn to port and begin the run back home. There are different pathways through the reeds, however, note that the water here is shallow (~1m). So the course is showing the deepest water.

Leg 7. (1.4 km)
Take the scenic route back to the main channel through the serene, reeded waterway of Snake Creek.
Leg 8. (0.5 km)
As you exit Snake Creek turn to starboard and follow the shoreline to the public boat ramp at the end of Liverpool Road.
Leg 9. (2.1 km)
Continue back towards the public boat ramp opposite Johnston Street. As the main boating channel runs parallel just off this shoreline, for your own safety keep as close as practical to the shore.
Leg 10. (1.1 km)
Continue back to the Hindmarsh Island bridge. As the main boating channel runs parallel just off this shoreline, for your own safety keep as close as practical to the shore.
Leg 11. (1.1 km)
From the bridge head back to the finish at the GAC. As the main boating channel runs parallel just off this shoreline, for your own safety keep as close as practical to the shore.
